Around 70 pilot whales face an almost certain death after swimming into Rif harbor

Despite desperate rescue efforts by locals, up to 70 Pilot Whales face an almost certain death after swimming into Rif harbor today. Many whales are already dead at the beach.

Photojournalist Alfons Finnsson, who captured astonishing pictures of the tragedy today, says the weather conditions are very bad for rescue work. Storm warnings have been issued by the Icelandic Met Office for the area around Rif today. “The storm was so intense that people had a hard time driving their cars to the scene today,” said Finnsson.
